About Jim Kiper, Smart Lift CEO and GM
Jim Kiper has been employed in the healthcare industry for more than 25 years, working closely with EMS and first responders, nurses, home health providers and families. Jim's experience and professional relationships have provided him with keen insight into the healthcare industry. With each job, from durable medical equipment representative, to respiratory therapy, patient advocate, to owner of VitAlert/Lifeline Personal Emergency Response System, Jim became more and more passionate about helping others.
It was during his time with Lifeline that Jim saw there was a need for a safe, portable lift and transfer device. More than 95% of calls made to Lifeline were about falls. Many times the responder was unable to lift the fallen person, so EMS was called to the scene to do a lift assist. Jim began to realize caretakers, first responders and EMS providers were increasing their risk of back injury as a result of less-than-ideal lift assist devices and techniques. In some cases, Jim even witnessed lifters do further damage to the patient and or loved than the fall itself.
After selling Lifeline to Philips, Jim’s friend, Wade, a Physical Therapy Assistant, had also noticed flaws with the current lift assist devices. Wade and his brother, Elliot, had already designed the Smart Lift Vest. Once showing it to Jim, the three collaborated and made the necessary changes to broaden their target market. With combining Wade’s perspective from a physical therapy standpoint and Jim’s experience with senior adults, healthcare providers, and EMS, they were then able to design the current model of the Smart Lift Vest.
Jim now owns Smart Lift. His time at Lifeline awarded him the knowledge to help make important modifications to create what is now known as the Smart Lift Vest. This product helps immobile loved ones and patients live fuller, happier, more independent lives by offering their caretakers and healthcare professionals a safe, straightforward way to lift and transfer them.
Smart Lift Vest is ideal for non-traumatic fall victims, people with special needs, and disabilities. The Smart Lift Vest works two-fold, reducing the chance of further injury to the patient while at the same time lessens the risk of back injury and strain to the caretaker.
Enforcing proper body mechanics, the lifter is able to use the Smart Lift Vest handles and other features to safely lift and/or transfer a loved one or patient without causing bruising, skin tears and joint dislocations. Constructed out of tarpaulin, the vest is easy to clean, easy to transport and easy to store. Tested multiple times by certified engineers, the Smart Lift Vest has a weight capacity of 750 pounds, working well in a variety of scenarios and situations.
Jim fully believes in the mission of Smart Lift Vest. It helps our loved ones and patients maintain an independent quality of life in their own homes. The safety and protection it offers caregivers, first responders and health care providers is equally important. Jim currently serves as CEO and General Manager of Smart Lift.
